Clutter, regardless of what kind, is unhealthy (to put it mildly). Your mind can be cluttered, your closets can be cluttered, or your entire house can be cluttered! When I awakened from my Lupus death (that’s what it felt like), all I saw was clutter everywhere. Did I mention I hate clutter?
I would look in our garage (after moving to our small retirement home) and all I saw was boxes! There was absolutely NO room for my car to fit, and all I wanted to do was cry. I was too weak and disorganized (my brain AND body) to get a handle on it. Even the three-step rule (Keep it, Give to Charity, or Ditch-it) didn’t work for me. And let me tell you, when you feel cluttered, or see clutter all around you? Procrastination sets in. You would think it would be the other way around, wouldn’t you?
So, in case any of you are struggling with this right now, I wanted to give you some ideas that have truly helped me.
How many times do you catch yourself saying, “huh”? Your mind is so preoccupied that you can’t even hear what the person in front of you is saying.
When our brain is cluttered with too many thoughts, it makes it very hard to concentrate. “Like really? You want me to do one more thing?” You have the demands of your full-time job (where many of you are spending most of your life right now). Not to mention your family-life, spiritual life, and your social life. One moment you seem to be moving swiftly through life, when “LOOK OUT!” You get hit with an accident, illness, ailing parents, kids, spouses, pets, etc.
1) Well, I learned a little technique from Kathryn on, Do It on A Dime (YouTube). Check her out if you get the chance! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CRI2UjClig The episode in this link is where I actually learned about “Brain-Draining”. And I’ve been doing it since Oct 12th, with great success. It clears my mind, because I write down every single thing that I can think of that is on my mind, and after I do that, I can give it a home… meaning that I can designate what day/month it needs to be completed. Just doing this, refreshes me. It’s off my mind, it’s on paper, and I know when I’m going to do it.
2) You absolutely do not have to have a planner to do this. The link above gives you some great ideas if you have a printer, but you could also just use a notebook. As for me? I’m a planner, sticker, doodle, junkie. I’m more of an Artsy type a gal. My mom is a notebook type of gal. My sister was a Day-Timer type of gal. Hey! Listen to your inner-girl (boy), what is she (he) crying out for? Look around, do your research. As for me, I enjoy Erin Condren planners, here is a link to her website: www.erincondren.com in case you want to check them out. So fun! BTW, keep your brain-draining list, and continually add and check them off as you complete them. It’s really quite exhilarating to check those things off your list! (For me anyway, NERD ALERT!)
3) If something is stressing you out. Stop your thought process and do one thing to help you toward your goal. Thinking about it over and over doesn’t help. Either does not doing anything toward your project, or argument, or phone call, or whatever you’re procrastinating on. Just STOP and do one thing to move you toward your goal. One… small… thing.

Go to her website, push the tab “Getting Started” and she’ll walk you through. Heads up! If you push, “Get her emails” you will be getting a LOT of them. I just have to warn you. If you like to keep your email box clean like me, it may drive you nuts. But I’ve learned to adjust because they’re so beneficial to me right now. There are other Flylady’s out there on YouTube and Instagram. Some of them are affiliated with Marla, and others are just pros at the FlyLady system.
I’m still learning and far from where I need to be; trust me. However, I’m much further than I ever thought possible. When I first started flylady I thought, “Oh my gosh, is this going to be even MORE work?” But eventually your home will start to clean itself! It makes your life so organized and streamlined, that you’re able to start your day and end your day peacefully. When that happens you’re able to handle your obstacles and challenges more calmly. (It’s free too, I might add.)
For my followers who are living with a Chronic Disease: Listen to your body… you’ll know when you feel well enough to tackle these things. You could be bedridden for quite some time, and then wake up to a mess. I understand and I’m so sorry. I’m sending my love, hugs, and prayers to all of you right now. Just know that I’m thinking and praying for you continually. BTW, you may want to bookmark this, so that when you’re feeling better you can get to these links.
